Why the Cheapest Battery Quote Is Often the Most Expensive Project
Two battery quotes land on the same desk, both quoting the same headline kWh figure, and one is meaningfully cheaper. It's tempting to treat that as the whole comparison. It usually isn't.
Warranties tell you what the manufacturer will contractually stand behind
A warranty isn't simply a confidence statement about build quality - warranty terms reflect a mix of battery chemistry, commercial strategy, permitted cycling, throughput, operating temperature, depth of discharge, state-of-charge limits and required servicing. What it actually tells you is the performance the manufacturer is prepared to contractually stand behind, and under what conditions - which is often more useful than the headline duration. A shorter warranty, or one with more restrictive conditions attached, is worth reading carefully rather than glossing over: two batteries can both advertise a ten-year warranty with materially different cycle limits, throughput limits and guaranteed retained capacity at year ten.
Cycle life and how it's actually stated
A battery's cycle life - how many charge/discharge cycles it can complete before capacity degrades meaningfully - directly affects how much value it delivers over its working life. It's also stated inconsistently between suppliers: at different depths of discharge, different temperatures, different definitions of "end of life." A number that looks better on paper isn't always describing the same thing as the number it's being compared against.
Power versus energy - two different specifications, one headline figure
A battery's energy capacity (kWh - how much it can store) and its power rating (kW - how fast it can charge or discharge) are separate specifications that get compressed into a single headline number more often than they should be. A battery with the right kWh but an undersized power rating can't actually deliver the value its energy capacity implies, because it simply can't move energy in or out fast enough when it's needed.
PCS sizing - the part that quietly limits everything else
The power conversion system - the inverter and associated equipment converting between the battery's DC storage and the site's AC supply - has its own capacity limit, and an undersized PCS caps what the battery can actually deliver regardless of how good the battery cells themselves are. It's an easy line item to under-spec quietly in a quote that's competing mainly on the headline battery price.
EMS quality - the difference between a battery and a useful battery
The energy management system controlling when the battery charges and discharges determines whether it actually captures the value it was sized to capture, or simply cycles on a generic default schedule that misses most of the opportunity. A cheaper EMS, or a less sophisticated one, can leave real value on the table every single day the system operates.
Commissioning - where a good spec can quietly go wrong
A battery system that's properly commissioned - genuinely tested, genuinely tuned to the site's real demand pattern - performs differently from one that's been switched on and left. Commissioning is easy to under-scope in a competitive quote, and its absence is rarely visible until the system's already underperforming.
O&M - the cost that doesn't show up in year one
Ongoing operations and maintenance costs, sometimes barely mentioned in an initial quote, accumulate over a system's working life and materially affect its real return. A quote that's silent on O&M isn't a quote without O&M costs - it's a quote that's deferred telling you about them.
Grid compliance - not optional, sometimes not included
Compliance with grid connection requirements, protection standards and the relevant application process is a genuine cost and a genuine risk if it's assumed rather than properly scoped. A quote that's silent on who's responsible for what here can turn into an expensive surprise well after the headline price has already been agreed.
