The Grid Connection Queue Has Been Rebuilt. Does That Mean Your Project Will Connect Sooner?
For years, Britain's grid connection queue operated rather like a restaurant that accepted unlimited reservations without checking whether the customers intended to arrive, whether the kitchen could serve them, or whether the building had enough tables.
The result was a queue holding more than 700GW of proposed projects - several times what the system actually needs. NESO, the National Energy System Operator, has now rewritten the booking system through what it calls connections reform.
What was wrong with the old queue
Application order dominated. A project's position was largely determined by when it applied, not whether it was genuinely ready to proceed. Immature or speculative schemes could hold a position in the queue for years, sitting in front of projects that were actually ready to build, and quoted connection dates could be a decade or more away.
What has changed
NESO confirmed a reformed pipeline at the end of 2025, moving from a "first come, first served" model to one prioritising projects that are ready and needed - genuinely deliverable schemes that align with the network's actual strategic requirements, rather than whoever applied first. It's the largest reform of the connections process to date, and it involved reassessing the existing queue against readiness criteria, not just changing the rules for new applications.
This note deliberately doesn't attempt to reproduce the full detail of that assessment process - it's genuinely detailed, and evolving as it's implemented.
What this means for generation and storage
Projects still face locational limits, export restrictions, evidence requirements and delivery milestones. Reform changes who queues where and how quickly, not the underlying physical limits of the network itself.
What this means for businesses increasing demand
Large new demand - electrified heat, EV fleets, manufacturing expansion, data centres - needs a credible connection strategy from the outset, not something bolted on once equipment has already been chosen. Being a genuine, well-evidenced project matters more under the new approach than it did under a pure queueing system.
Behind-the-meter projects aren't automatically exempt
Even a modest onsite project - solar, a battery, an EV charging installation - can still require a DNO application, export limitation, or an import capacity change, depending on what's already agreed at the site. Reform of the large-project queue doesn't remove the need to check a smaller project's own connection position properly.
What credible project development looks like
The organisations doing well out of this reform are the ones treating the connection as part of the project's commercial design from day one - aligning the operational objective, the connection position, site rights, planning, sizing and delivery programme, rather than treating the grid application as paperwork to complete once everything else has already been decided.
