Every Meter Is Becoming Half-Hourly. Will That Make Your Energy Contract Smarter?
Two businesses can use exactly the same amount of electricity in a year and cost a supplier very different amounts to serve. One consumes steadily through the working day. The other concentrates demand into the most expensive evening periods.
Historically, much of the market settled smaller meters against broad assumptions about when they were likely to be using electricity. A programme called market-wide half-hourly settlement is changing that - increasingly, the market settles what actually happened, every half hour.
What settlement actually means
Suppliers buy electricity in advance to meet expected demand. Settlement is the process that reconciles what was purchased against what customers actually consumed. For a long time, that reconciliation for smaller, non-half-hourly meters relied on standardised consumption profiles rather than a site's real, measured pattern.
What's changing
Market-wide half-hourly settlement is moving the whole market onto a half-hourly settlement framework - but that doesn't mean every meter ends up settled against its own actual consumption. Where suitable smart or advanced meter data is available and used, a site can be settled against its own real half-hourly pattern. Where it isn't, Elexon's new Load Shaping Service replaces the old, broader Profile Class approach with more granular, market-derived load shapes - a big improvement on the old assumptions, but still a modelled shape rather than a site's own actual data. Migration is a genuinely large, multi-year programme - it began moving meters in late 2025, with several million migrated within its first few months, and full completion and cutover to the new arrangements isn't expected until 2027. It's one of the more significant, if quietly discussed, changes to how the energy market actually settles cost - just not a guarantee that every meter now settles on its own real numbers.
Why load shape matters
Once settlement reflects a site's real half-hourly pattern, the shape of that consumption - not just the annual total - becomes commercially visible in a way it wasn't before. Time of use, peak timing, weekday versus weekend operation, seasonality and how predictable the pattern is all start to matter more directly to how a site is priced.
What businesses may eventually notice
More genuinely time-of-use tariffs, pricing that differentiates more clearly between load shapes, demand-shifting incentives, and a closer link generally between when electricity is used and what it costs. None of this arrives instantly or uniformly - it develops as settlement infrastructure and supplier products catch up with the more precise data now available.

The risk worth naming
A difficult load shape - heavily peaked, poorly timed, hard to predict - can become visible to suppliers in pricing before the business itself has properly understood its own pattern. Better data cuts both ways; it's not automatically an advantage unless someone's actually looking at it from the customer's side too.

Secure proper access to half-hourly data as migration reaches each site, understand where the genuine peaks and patterns actually sit, verify records against what's actually being billed, compare total cost rather than headline rate, and test genuine operational changes before spending on new technology to solve a problem that might be solvable by simply shifting demand.
Half-hourly settlement should make the market more accurate. Whether it makes an individual business's position better depends on something less automatic: whether the business understands when it uses electricity, and can do anything about it.
